Perspective As Satiated Hunger or: TonyMorganisms
I just thanked God, as I do not as often as I should, for placing me where I am in life. We are all, arguably, a product of our time and our place. I happen to be in Anderson, South Carolina in 2009. That may not mean much to you now, but I guarantee that in a few years whenever someone says “Anderson, South Carolina” and “2009″ together, it will mean something.
It will not mean something because of me, but rather because of some really cool people and some really cool things that are going to happen. One of those people is Tony Morgan. I have the absurd pleasure of not only knowing Tony, but also working with him. And not only do I work with him, but he is my boss. I have coerced my way into his life and, as such, I get to have lunch with him on a regular basis.
Tony is extremely humble and extremely wise; this combination always results in a feast of learning. This month, I absorbed the concept of perspective.
It is easy to take stock of ones life by reflecting on the past. We can look back and see how far we have come. Or we can look ahead to the future — a much more difficult campaign — and see where we expect to go. I sense from Tony that he is able to balance the two in a sort of satiated hunger.
Two people can be in identical situations and have comletely different outcomes. It all depends on the perspective they each bring to the situation. Dwelling too much on the past can result in a lazy kick-your-feet-up posture; one basks in previous successes that no longer mean anything. Camping out in the future too much can result in a dreamy detached-from-reality stance; one flies through wonderlands that will never be realized.
I sense a balance is appropriate: we can be satiated with our past and yet hungry for the future. The result is a present full of apt perspective.
