The Kingdom Ball

I am reading a book called Axiom by Bill Hybels. My mother gave it to me for Christmas — because she loves me. I like the portable proverb style of content — it is absurdly easy to read and retain. The cross-references at the end of each chapter are also cool. (It slightly bothers me when books are not intended to be read sequentially; my brain convinces me I am probably missing something; I am trying to change that.)

One of the things Bill talks about is the “kingdom ball.” He points out that the disciples were not quite the misfits most of us make them out to be. History shows they were quite apt at leadership.

And when [Jesus'] action-oriented, high-capacity direct reports were thrown the kingdom ball, they scored in a way that would count for all of history.

This is not dissimilar from the advice Perry gave us — to want the ball. Bill challenges us, in the context of building teams, to find people who are increasing the collective leadership of that team.

May we all want the kingdom ball and score in a way that counts for history. May we also surround ourselves with people who share that passion.
