Faith: Preservation or Reinterpretation?

I have been reading a book — one that I highly recommend. It is called Why We’re Not Emergent (By Two Guys Who Should Be) by Kevin DeYoung and Ted Kluck. As the title suggests, it addresses some of the problems with the emergent movement by two young leaders who could easily embrace the movement. One concept that has given me much thought is how we address our faith throughout generations.

Salt Water

Anyone who has taken a tumble in the ocean knows the bitter taste of salt water. It is an unforgettably powerful experience. It is possible for me to instantly recall the sense and taste of salt water in my mouth. I remember the time I was in the Dead Sea. I tried not to get any water on my face; one drop of water on my lip left a salty impression for 20 or 30 minutes.

The [Easy] Road Not Taken

Robert Frost’s most famous poem might be The Road Not Taken, which he published in 1916. In it he discusses the path he chose — what he calls the road less traveled by. There is no shortage of critique or assessment of the poem and what it truly means. I imagine it is true for most people when they read a poem like his that they try to personalize it. As I look out the window of my office through the field outside, I often focus my gaze on a small bird or a rabbit or a butterfly. These creatures seem largely oblivious to the fact that humans are increasing in numbers around their meadow. They seem not to care about the construction and other sundry noises that surround them. I have often thought about how seemingly fluid the lives of these creatures are. I have never seen two bluebirds collide in midair. I have never seen a rabbit hop into a wall and hit its head. I have seen a butterfly collide with a windshield of a car, but that is hardly the butterfly’s fault.

What Are You Rooting For? Part II

My three-day trip to Arkansas turned into an eight-day trip to Arkansas. This gave me an opportunity to see more of the surrounding area and also to watch the final game of the aforementioned Euro 2008 tournament. I also noticed a pattern during my lengthy stay in my hotel: I was more in tune with the political news that never ceases to infiltrate our society. I do not normally read any newspaper nor do I watch television news. Most of the news I find relevant is automatically brought to me through my Google sidebar right on my desktop. In the hotel, though, I found I would turn on Fox News every morning and was given not one, but two papers a day to peruse while I enjoyed my continental breakfast.
