What Are You Rooting For? Part I
I find myself in the northwest corner of Arkansas – the Bentonville/Rogers area, specifically. This area houses the home offices of Tyson chicken, Daisy air rifles, and Wal-Mart; the latter of which may or may not be the reason I find myself here. But I digress… what better place than the Ozarks than to sit down and watch the UEFA Euro 2008 soccer tournament being hosted in Austria and Switzerland?
I grant that soccer is not the sport in the US that it is in the rest of the world, and I grant that watching an hour-and-a-half or more of soccer yielding a single goal is potentially mind-numbing. I will, however, say that watching teams play soccer for their country can be an interesting, to say the least, event.
I will posit that teams play in the Euro Cup, the Americas Cup, and the World Cup with the same passion as they do for the Olympics. It is as if the very reputation of the country is at stake.
I have often watched sports fans with interest: the passion they have for their team can at times be obsessive. What would it take for me to be so obsessive? Am I so obsessed about anything?
