Happy Changes

I have talked recently about how we spend our labor and how we are internally wired. These topics are not solely didactic; they are accurate representations of how I have been thinking. I suppose there has been a rumbling inside of me to change. I have been long in prayer and thought about what to modify about my employ and God has graciously answered.

I will soon resign from my position at Verizon and take on a new role at Sun Microsystems. The details are less relevant here, but suffice to say that I will remain a geek. I will engage in plenty of mobility and creativity that seem to match up better with my wiring.

In tandem with the above prayer and thought, I found myself studying the Hallel, which is essentially Psalms 113-118. They are typically recited or sung all together for happy occasions. I was, and am, particularly fascinated with one verse:

Psalm 116:5 — Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.

This verse is short and sweet, and powerful. We learn about God’s grace, His mercy, and His righteousness. One could spend weeks studying each one of these facets. And yet I fear with such a short verse that we may quickly graze right over it.

It seems that we also may, like a dragonfly, zip around the happy moments in life. May we not forget our God and His hand in our lives during these happy times — both big and small. I do not understand why God does what He does, nor do I understand His timing or the magnitude of some of these things.

I am eager to learn more about Him, and myself in the process. May we learn to be gracious, merciful, and righteous to others.
