Road Trip

I drove through what might be the most beautiful part of our fair country this week. I hopped around Denver and made my way West on I-70. That road climbs up the Rockies past fascinating forests, lakes, and, of course, the Colorado River. It passes through the Eisenhower Tunnel, the highest tunnel in the world. It is a long 1.7 miles long; that might not sound like much, but when you realize what is on top of you, it is breathtaking. The road then descends down the Western Slope of the Rockies and into Utah. There, one can see the famous reddish buttes. (Read on …)

Emoticon Worship

If I had a dollar for every time I saw an emoticon smiley face at work, I could probably stop working for a while. I make extensive use of email and instant messaging programs to get work done. I work with dozens of people all over the country and these real-time communication tools are invaluable. They are also dishonest.

The Pleasures of Finding and Being Found

What gives us greater joy than finding something that was lost? Have you ever lost your car keys? The frustration! The agony! The complete sense of helplessness! But what joy, what happiness, what comfort overwhelms when the lost keys are found. We have all lost something; whether big or small. But we were once lost, as well.

Family Ties

I read an article today about widows in India. Tradition says that widows are a financial drain on their families and the women are shunned. They are told to wear white and shave their heads; they are no longer considered beautiful. Perhaps the most disturbing thing is that they are abandoned by their own children.
